Bachelor's degree course Medical Engineering Fields of activity and career prospects

|
Research
In the area of medical and biotechnical research and development the
engineers are involved in problem solving and optimising medical and
biotechnical instruments; and they are working closely together with
scientists. They have to plan tests, design, and check the test
arrangements, collect and evaluate the data, and they’re in charge of
servicing existing equipment. |
 Development
The engineers are developing and optimising new mechanical and
electronic devices, implants and technical tools for medical diagnosis and
therapy for patients and handicapped people. Data processing is
increasingly important in construction design (CAD). Furthermore they have
to provide the necessary documentation required for the medical
certification on different markets. The engineers also have to prepare
technical documentations and training of sales representatives.
Biotechnology develops mechatronic devices that, beginning with sampling,
use various biochemical measurement methods including fluorescence markers
and DNA-multiplication for all dimensions. |
 Medical Engineering in hospitals
In a hospital medical engineers are the interface between physician
and technology. Their tasks are the organisation and management of safety
checks based on the regulations of the Act of Medical Devices
(Medizinproduktegesetz), the instruction of the staff that uses the
devices and informing them about the professional handling of medical
instruments. They have to monitor the patient care supported by complex
systems, advise physicians if they plan to purchase new equipment and they
are involved in hospital budgeting. |
 Product management and Sales
The engineers are representatives of their company, and they are the
contact person for physicians, pharmaceutical companies, technical staff
at the hospital, and the hospital administration. They collect data on
client’s desires, and hand them over as proposals for improvement of the
products. Sales engineers present medical or biotechnological devices and
methods, write offers and are in charge of sales negotiations. As product
manager they organise the information flow between the technical
departments and the sales department of the company. |
