Degree Course Structure

Students will graduate from this degree course after 7 semesters. The course is divided into an introductory study period (2 semesters) and a main study period (5 semesters). In the introductory study period the basics of medicine, business studies, mathematics, and computer science will be taught. In the main study period the teachings in these areas will focus primarily on the health care sector.

In the 6th semester the students will have to complete their practical project, in order for them to become familiar with information management work scenarios in the health care sector. It will last 22 weeks and the students have the possibility to carry out their internship in health care centres, insurances, health care authorities or research institutes, and if they are interested they can also take the internship abroad. The professional support during the practical project will prepare them for the independent and project-related way of working in their future job.

In order to establish their core focus, the students have to take 6 compulsory optional modules, of which at least two have to be technology or business centred.

Possible compulsory optional modules are:

Health telematics and eHealth

Web Programming

Statistic evaluation systems

Special information management

Strategic controlling

Hospital management game

Operative therapy

Professional English

Chinese, Spanish

Italian

In order to prepare the students for their future career, the degree course includes an introduction to scientific work, Business and Technical English in order to prepare them for jobs in the health care sector on an international level, and communication and moderation seminars to encourage their ability to work in teams. Many courses include presentations, and several modules are accompanied by e-learning modules.

The final part of the degree course is the Bachelor’s thesis, which the students usually write at an external institution – if desired abroad. But there is also the possibility to write the thesis at Ulm University.

In total the compulsory and compulsory optional modules add up to 144 contact hours, and 210 ECTS credits, which equals 60 ECTS credits per year.
